Everything You Need To Know About Turtle Beach (Laniakea Beach)

Any trip to Oahu would be incomplete without seeing Hawaiian sea turtles, AKA honu. There’s no better place to catch them basking in the sun and snoozing in the sand than Laniakea beach, rightfully known as turtle beach. The chance to escape the busy beaches of Waikiki and observe sea turtles in their natural habitat makes the drive from Honolulu totally worth it!

Getting There

Laniakea beach is only a short, 45 minute drive from Honolulu. There is a small parking lot directly across from the beach, but be sure to get there early because the lot fills up fast. It is common for people to park on the side of the road, but be aware of street signs. It is also important to only bring necessary belongings and keep anything else locked in the trunk of your car as car break-ins have been reported more frequently.

Optimal Turtle Viewing Time

The best time to see the sea turtles is in the afternoon from around 11am-3pm when you have the greatest chance of catching them basking in the sun. The turtles are less likely to be out on cloudy, windy days as they like the heat of the sun.

Respecting The Rules

It is very important to follow the rules regarding proximity. A conservationist will put a red rope about 10 feet from the sea turtle, marking how close you are allowed to get. If you are lucky enough to see a turtle as you are snorkelling, make sure to stay several feet away and absolutely no touching.

At the waters edge, there is lava rock covered in algae. Be mindful not to step on the rocks as you’re walking into the water as this is the turtles food supply. Feeding the turtles is also prohibited.

These rules are all kept in place to keep the turtles safe and thriving! They are a protected and endangered species.

Swimming At Laniakea Beach

The waves at Laniakea beach can be dangerous to swim in because of strong rip currents and harsh waves. This is especially true in the winter. Follow the warnings of the signs put out by lifeguards and always be cautious when entering the water.

At the far right of the beach, there is a small area suitable for swimming. The waves here are less harsh and it is a good place to snorkel and see colorful fish. The chance to spot a sea turtle swimming in the water make the trip out to Laniakea beach totally worth it!

The Perfect Place To Catch A Sunset

When searching for Oahu’s perfect sunset, you’d be hard pressed to find a better spot than Laniakea beach. Not only are the views stunning, but you will find the beach to be exceptionally more spacious than the beaches of Waikiki.

Nearby Foodtrucks

Northern Oahu is known for their food trucks. Only a quick, 10 minute drive from Laniakea beach will take you to some of the best. One of my favorites is Big Wave Shrimp Truck. The food is amazing and they give generous amounts for a great price. The combo plate of ribs and garlic shrimp was only 20 dollars. If seafood isn’t what you’re craving, there are various neighboring food trucks offering a range of food types including Mexican, American, and Korean cuisines.
